Effective Strategies for Text in AI-Generated Images
Doug A. had a question for me 1:1 but I wanted to answer out to the broad forum as many others may have a similar question or query and for me to also get some insights from others who may have ideas on how they resolve this issue of getting images to render text or quotes correctly without error or silly copywriting. How to Handle Text in AI-Generated Images: Two Approaches AI image generators—like the one in ChatGPT (DALL·E 3)—can sometimes render amazing images with legible, powerful text, but not always. Here’s a quick guide on when to avoid text and when it’s actually safe (and effective!) to use it. 🅰️ Approach 1: Avoid Embedded Text, Add It Yourself Best when you want full control over:
Spelling
Font styles and alignment
Brand consistency
How? Prompt the AI to generate the layout only:
"Design a bold poster layout with space for a quote. No text included."
Then add your actual text later using tools like:
Canva
Figma
Photoshop
🅱️ Approach 2: Let the AI Render the Text Use this when the text is part of the art—like titles, signs, or quotes baked into the image. Prompt Tip:
"Design a 1950s comic book cover with the title ‘Galactic Hero’ in bold retro font. The text should be clean and legible."
You can also touch up the text using:
Inpainting (if the tool supports it)
Manual overlay in Canva or Photoshop
🔍 Real Examples Where ChatGPT's Image Generator Got It Right 1. Sales Career Fork-in-the-Road Sign
Prompt: Generate an illustrative image showing a young early-career female professional in business attire standing at a crossroads. She is contemplating which path to take. Provide signposts for each fort showing two sets of verbiage. Verbiage 1: “Enter here for sales. Hard. Tough. Rewarding.” and Verbiage 2: “Easier. More traffic. Constraints on income.” Please look at this critically from the lens of a graphic designer who wants perfection and wants the directional signs to be perfectly clear, readable, and on-brand, with clear distance and no overriding of verbiage. Spelling consistency is critical.
2. Group Mindset Quote Poster
“Mindset drives motion. And motion drives results.”
3. Corporate Building Quote
“A founder’s growth will always unlock their organization’s growth.”
The full prompts for Prompt 2 and 3 are not provided. Pro Tip: ChatGPT (DALL·E 3) handles text best when:
It’s short (1–2 lines)
Centered or part of signage/posters
Uses familiar fonts or clear settings
